Which Antivirus Software Has the Least System Impact?

Which antivirus software has the to the lowest degree system impact?

It's truthful: Antivirus programs can slow your computer, sometimes by quite a lot.

Withal we've found several antivirus programs with organization slowdowns so minor that yous'll never notice them unless you're doing something processor-intensive, such equally playing a high-end game or rendering video footage.

The lightest paid antivirus plan nosotros tested is ESET Smart Security Premium,  which slowed our examination laptop by about 12% during active scans. ESET is also one of our picks for all-time antivirus overall.

The lightest free antivirus program was Kaspersky Security Deject Free, whose system impact ranged from -1% in the background (it actually sped the arrangement up a chip) to half dozen% during a full scan.

Passive slowdown Full-scan slowdown Quick-browse slowdown
Avast Gratuitous Antivirus 4.4% 29.2% 53.2%
AVG AntiVirus Free v.3% 12.eight% 25.6%
Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition 2.two% 29.2% N/A
Bitdefender Full Security nineteen.2% 32.7% thirty.one%
ESET Smart Security Premium two.0% 11.viii% North/A
Kaspersky Security Cloud Free -0.nine% five.8% ane.two%
Kaspersky Total Security xi.viii% 26.5% 21.half-dozen%
McAfee Total Protection 8.9% 96% 38.6%
Microsoft Windows Defender Northward/A xx.3% 12.8%
Trend Micro Maximum Security 3.9% 56.9% 35.3%

How we exam AV software performance impact

Nosotros tested half-dozen paid Windows antivirus programs in the summer and fall of 2020 on a Lenovo ThinkPad T470 notebook calculator. We tested 5 free Windows antivirus programs on an Asus X555LA notebook in the leap of 2019, and a sixth free Windows programme, Kaspersky Security Cloud Costless, in the fall of 2019.

We used our home-grown Excel benchmark examination, which measures how long information technology takes the CPU to match twenty,000 names with xx,000 addresses on a spreadsheet, to estimate arrangement bear on. For Kaspersky Security Deject Free, we used a previous version of the same test that ran on OpenOffice.

Nosotros measured arrangement speed before any 3rd-party antivirus programme was installed; after an antivirus program was installed, but not during any active scans; during a full scan; and during a quick scan. Each test was run three times for each program, and the results averaged.

The numbers recorded were the completion times of the name-and-accost matching tasks. Slowdowns were calculated using the pre-installation completion times as baselines and calculating the percentages by which each task increased the amount of time needed to consummate the matching task. Baselines were taken separately for each programme's prepare of tests.

The results

Among paid antivirus programs, ESET was not the fastest in all 3 categories that we measured: passive system impact, total-scan system impact and quick-scan arrangement impact.

That may be because ESET doesn't accept a quick-scan pick. The lightest quick-scan affect among paid programs was held by Kaspersky Full Security at 22%, a percentage that was virtually twice as much every bit ESET'due south full-scan impact. Kaspersky did take the second-lightest full-scan impact in the bunch, notwithstanding.

Kaspersky Security Cloud Free was the undisputed winner in the gratuitous categories, beating all rivals in passive, full-scan and quick-scan impacts. Information technology really sped up the system a bit afterwards installation, indicating that information technology may be more efficient that the built-in Microsoft Windows Defender, which runs past default but deactivates itself if a third-political party antivirus programme is installed.

Kaspersky Security Cloud Gratis's total-scan organization touch was a barely noticeable six%; its quick-scan impact was a barely measurable i%.

The runners-upward

Most other programs were less consequent in their rankings. For case, McAfee Total Protection had a relatively light groundwork affect, slowing down the Lenovo laptop by only nine% after installation. But McAfee's full scan hit our exam laptop like a ton of bricks, slowing it downwards by 96%.

Y'all'd probably notice that full-browse slowdown even if you were just checking electronic mail. Y'all wouldn't notice ESET's 12% hitting unless yous were intensively using the processor already.

As well, Avast Free Antivirus (iv.4%) had less of a background impact than its sibling AVG AntiVirus Free, (5.ii%). Only Avast'due south full-scan slowdown was the heaviest at 53%, while AVG's was less than half that at 25%.

It's difficult to determine a second place amid the paid programs. Two of them, Bitdefender Total Security and Kaspersky Total Security, had relatively high post-installation background system impacts, of 19% and 12%, respectively, even so traded that for fairly light impacts — 33% and 26% — during organization scans.

On the other end of the scale were McAfee Total Protection and Tendency Micro Maximum Security, which had background impacts in the single digits, still full-scan slowdowns of 96% and 57%, respectively.

In other words, you'd be trading a small amount of permanent background noise for huge slowdowns during total scans, which you could schedule to happen only at dark while the computer is idling.

Establishing the 2d-place finisher among the costless programs is even more than muddled. Microsoft Defender Antivirus, aka Windows Defender, tin can't actually be measured for groundwork system impact because it'south built right into Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Just information technology had a very respectable total-scan slowdown of 20% and a quick-scan one of 13%.

Meanwhile, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition doesn't have a quick-scan selection. Its background impact is just 2%, the best afterward Kaspersky. Simply its full-browse slowdown is 29%, tied with Avast Free Antivirus for final.

It is clear that Avast is in concluding identify in the complimentary bunch. Not only was it tied with Bitdefender Gratis for the largest full-scan slowdown, but it had the largest background impact (after AVG AntiVirus Free) and a whopping quick-browse slowdown of 53%, the most among all the free programs.

How antivirus programs are marketed

Nigh antivirus brands offer iii or iv dissimilar paid Windows programs, all sharing the aforementioned basic protections but adding a few more actress features with each increase in toll.

For example, Bitdefender offers Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, Bitdefender Cyberspace Security and Bitdefender Total Security, and each costs about $twenty more per year than the previous one.

But but the concluding has all the bells and whistles that Bitdefender offers, such equally a password manager, webcam protection, parental controls or a system optimizer. Meanwhile, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition uses the same malware-detection engine as its paid siblings, just with far fewer options and extra features.

When deciding which antivirus program to buy (or download for complimentary), evaluate which one has the features you need. For more on this, bank check out our guide on how to choose antivirus software.
